One of the most obvious indicators of an infestation is by the telltale bite marks– commonly numerous in a line– on the face, neck, arms, hands, or any other body parts while sleeping. However, these bite marks may take up to two weeks to develop in some individuals so it is crucial to try to find additional indicators of bed bugs in homes and businesses.
Indicators of Bed Bugs
The most accurate way to identify a potential infestation is to search for physical indications of bed bugs. When cleaning, changing bedding, or staying away from home, look for:
- Rusty or red spots on bed sheets or mattresses brought on by bed bugs being squashed.
- Dark spots roughly the size of a period, which are bed bug waste matter and may bleed on the material like a marker would.
- Eggs and eggshells, which are small (about 1mm), light yellow skins that nymphs shed as they grow.
- Live bed bugs
Where To Try To Find Bed Bugs
When they are not feeding, bed bugs hide in a wide range of spots. Around the bed, they can be located near the piping, seams and tags of the bed mattress and box spring, and in gaps on the bed frame and headboard.
If the room is seriously infested, you might locate bed bugs:
- In the seams of chairs and sofas, between pillows, in the folds of curtains
In cabinet joints - In electric receptacles and home appliances
- Under loose wallpaper and wall hangings
- At the junction where the wall and the ceiling meet
- Even in the head of a screw!
Since bed bugs are only around the width of a credit card, they can squeeze into exceptionally little hiding spots. If a gap can hold a credit card, it can hide a bed bug. Make sure to check all around where you’ll be sleeping, and don’t let the bed bugs bite.
